How accurate is this calculator?

It is a good starting point if your periods come at roughly the same time every month. The more your cycle length changes, the less reliable it becomes. Even with regular periods, the real day can come two or three days before or after the day shown here.

Why does it show several days instead of one?

Because sperm can wait. Sperm can stay alive inside your body for up to five days, while the egg lives only about 12 to 24 hours after it is released. So in each cycle there are about six days when pregnancy is possible: the five days before the egg is released, and the day it is released.

What if my periods are irregular?

Then a calendar alone will not give you a clear answer. An ovulation kit from the chemist will tell you much more. It checks your urine for a hormone that rises just before the egg is released. Your doctor may also suggest a simple blood test, done about a week before your next period is due, to check whether an egg was released at all.

If I try on these days, will I definitely get pregnant?

No. Even when the timing is right, a healthy couple under 35 has only about a 20 to 25 in 100 chance in any single month. Most couples take several months. This is normal and does not mean something is wrong.

What is more reliable than a calendar?

Ovulation kits from the chemist. Watching your vaginal discharge, which turns clear and stretchy, a bit like raw egg white, around your most fertile days. Checking your body temperature every morning before getting out of bed. And, if your doctor advises it, a scan or a blood test at the clinic.

When should I see a doctor?

If you are under 35 and have been trying for a year, or 35 or above and have been trying for six months. Go sooner if your periods are very irregular or have stopped, or if you already know of a health problem that affects having children.
